Clifton, Arizona's Giant Copper Mine

This small town near the New Mexico border is home to a mind-bogglingly large copper mine, operated by Phelps-Dodge.  As you travel US 191 (reported to be the least traveled US highway in the country) north of Clifton, you pass a viewpoint of the massive operation.  The picture above shows less than half of it.

Phelps-Dodge has literally moved entire mountains in order to extract the copper ore inside, on average, 125,000 tons of ore every day.  Clifton would likely be a ghost town without the mine, and even with it, the town appears to be holding on by a thread.

If you explore Clifton (cross the bridge from 191 at the train station) you'll find this giant piece of mining equipment.  It's open to the public, so you're free to climb around on it, in it, and under it.  To find out more about Clifton, US 191, and the Phelps-Dodge Mine, visit my other website, http://takemytrip.com/.
